THE CASE OF EUROPEAN SEA BASS

MY PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

I worked at the Marine Biology research group of the University of Ghent .

The main three research themes of the group are:

1. Biodiversity and ecosystem functioning.

2. Pollution and climate change.

3. Marine resource and environmental management.

However, the research topic approach of my supervisor is " Telemetry." This topic is apart from the main three research themes of the group.

THE PROJECT

My supervisor, Jolien Goossens investigates the movement ecology of European sea bass in the Southern North Sea.

The general goals of this PhD project are to understand sea bass habitat use in Belgian waters, to map seasonal migrations and to link these movement patterns to available fisheries data. In order to observe the obscure movements of fish, acoustic data storage tags (ADST) are implanted in sea bass.

By writing the sea bass review I contributed to one of her PhD thesis chapters.

Sea bass management

Sea bass description

  • European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) is an important specie for the fishing industry for both commercial and recreational sectors.

  • Sea bass inhabits the coasts, estuaries, and lagoons of the Mediterranean Sea and Northeastern Atlantic Ocean.

  • The life cycle characterized by slow growth, late maturity, and strong site fidelity.

  • The Atlantic stocks have been declining since the beginning of the intensive fishing activities.

Short History of sea bass management

  • 1960s and beginning of the 1970s: exploited mainly by recreational anglers.

  • 1070S: First records of commercial sea bass fisheries developing in North-West Europe.

  • 1983: the Minimum Conservation Reference Size (MCRS) of sea bass in the Northeast Atlantic was introduced at 32 cm, increasing to 36 cm in 1990.

  • 1992: Ireland banned commercial fishing.

  • December 2014: Sea bass emergency measures between January 2015 and December 2016, restriction bans were included for commercial and recreational sectors.

  • 2017-2018: Regulations allowed a limit to catch sea bass in commercial and recreational sectors.

  • 2019: Sea bass management become part of the EU multiannual plan (MAP) for Western Waters and adjacent waters.

WHERE TO FIND SEA BASS COUNCIL REGULATIONS?

EU MEASURES

WHAT KIND OF ORGANISMS DOES THE EUROPEAN COUNCIL TAKES INTO ACCOUNT?

The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES)

Is an intergovernmental marine science organization, meeting societal needs for impartial evidence on the state and sustainable use of our seas and oceans.

Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries (STECF)

Stakeholders such as...

The North Western Waters Advisory Council (NWWAC)

Is a stakeholder body that opens a forum for dialogue between the fishing sector (both industrial and small scale fleets) and other groups of interest, including environmental NGOs, consumers representatives, recreational anglers and civil society
